Myth-busting In Industrial Design: Is IP Protection Enough?

Many believe that protecting your design is enough to guarantee commercial success. In reality, IP is just the starting point. Here’s why:
Securing intellectual property gives you the legal right to your idea, but it doesn’t create demand, build partnerships, or open doors to the market. I’ve seen brilliant, well protected concepts stall because there was no clear route to commercialisation, no market validation, no go-to-market plan, and no business model to support growth.
The real challenge (and opportunity) is turning protected ideas into products that people want and building the right relationships to get them into the hands of customers. That means understanding your market, developing a compelling value proposition, and being proactive about licensing, partnerships, and distribution.
